3rd graders at Del Mar Heights are on a mission to end the maltreatment of dolphins and whales!
Students read an article in Time for Kids about the National Aquarium moving its dolphins to an ocean sanctuary. This led to a discussion about Sea World and I showed them a video about an Orca named Lolita who lives alone in a tank that doesn't meet guidelines for size.
When students researched more, they also learned about Japan's practice of killing whales and dolphins and capturing dolphins for captivity. They decided to write letters to Sea World, Miami Seaquarium and Prime Minister Abe asking them to reconsider their treatment of these animals. Let's hope they listen! Student agency, exhibited in this experience, is one of the five principles of District Design 2022.
